Originally known as The Greater Boston Area Netware Users Group, BNUG was founded in December of 1986 and is run entirely by volunteers. BNUG has a membership base of approximately 1500, of whom several hundred subscribe to the BNUG e-mail list. BNUG has held meetings at a number of locations over the years, including Proteon's offices in Westborough, Novell's site in Wellesley, Harvard University in Cambridge, and Mount Ida College in Newton.

Presently, BNUG holds its general meetings at Microsoft's office in Waltham. General meetings are held on the 1st Tuesday of each month. The BNUG Executive Board usually meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month, but this schedule may change from time to time. Please check the BNUG calendar page for the date and location of BNUG's next meeting.

BNUG's President Emeritus, Glenn Fund, ran the group from its inception through 1995, a period which saw the group evolve from a dedicated NetWare-only group to an organization covering networking issues of all sorts. During Josh Turiel's tenure as President from 1995 until 1998, BNUG started focusing on education as a major part of its mission. Andrew Daitch expanded this focus with a series of weekend training seminars on various networking topics. BNUG's current president, Mark Kushinsky, has been serving for more years than he cares to admit. There is a full list of the current BNUG Executive Board here.

BNUG sponsors monthly meetings on a wide variety of topics, and has presented a number of special events over the years including the LAN Ahoy! trade show and cruise, the Pub Crawl, the User Lab at Networks Expo, and the BNUG annual Anniversary Meeting each December.

BNUG is committed to hosting engaging, challenging and knowledgeable speakers, fine refreshments, and -- in the words of Glenn Fund -- lots of free stuff.
